Should I Tip My Tattoo Artist?

A complicated conversation indeed, many people believe paying hundreds, and sometimes thousands of dollars for the tattoo itself is enough. This leads to asking to tip or not to tip.

Tipping is a sign of gratitude and monetarily shows the artist your appreciation. When purchasing a product, you pay the sticker price and any additional taxes and fees–however, when you are offered personalized service, this is where “tipping etiquette” comes in to play.

Tipping is a personal decision, but we highly encourage you to tip your tattoo artist for three reasons:

  1. Just like waitresses, hairstylists, and barbers, your tip show’s your appreciation for their service. Although you pay for your service, your artist will not receive all of the money you pay for their efforts. Unless they are the shop owner, and even then if they did an exceptional job a nice tip is a great expression of gratitude for their work and experience.
  2. Your tattoo is customized to your exact taste. Your artist will put in a lot of time and effort into drawing your dream ink, so even before they start the job, they are working for free as prepping takes time and effort.
  3. Finally, you want to make a good impression! If you intend to get more ink from this artist, it will be in your best interest as the perks may play in your favor. Some artists do touch-ups at no cost, especially if they remember your generosity. Also, when you step out of their door, you want to feel comfortable enough to return should anything happen to your tattoo that is out of your control.
